Washington, D.C. – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court decisions to uphold GOP laws to restrict voting and further empower special interests:
“It is difficult to fathom that the U.S. Supreme Court, which is bound by both duty and the Constitution to administer equal justice under law, has done more to set voting rights back than any other actor in the last decade. Adding insult to injury, the Court issued a second jaw-dropping decision today making it much harder to expose the evils of dark money in our political system.
“If you believe in open and fair democracy and the principle of one person, one vote, today is one of the darkest days in all of the Supreme Court’s history.
“In the wake of the disastrous Citizens United v. FEC and Shelby County v. Holder decisions—two of the most notorious decisions the Supreme Court has ever issued—the Court’s conservative majority has only rubbed salt in the wound with their rulings today.
“It is simply unconscionable that the Court’s conservative majority chose to double down on their gutting of the Voting Rights Act, failing to properly respond to a wave of restrictive and discriminatory laws in the wake of Shelby and a flood of suppressive laws that have followed President Trump’s Big Lie about the November election.
“These decisions today only further underscore the need for Congress to act to preserve democracy by ensuring that every eligible American is able to freely exercise their fundamental right to vote and that billionaires are no longer able to buy elections.”
