Senate Democrats Release Report Highlighting DOGE’s Deep Cuts To Veteran Benefits

Washington, D.C. – Leader Schumer, along with Senate Democrats, released the following report on how President Trump, Elon Musk and DOGE are cutting the Department of Veterans Affairs to the bone.

President Trump promised repeatedly on the campaign trail, “We got to take care of our veterans” and “I will put veterans first.” Yet his team at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency has slashed the federal workforce, firing up to 6,000 veteran workers and decimating staff at the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Over 2,400 VA staffers have been fired and DOGE announced plans to terminate 80,000 more. That’s one in five staffers that serve our nation’s heroes by getting them to appointments, providing lifesaving care, and helping them receive the benefits they’ve earned, all in the name of supposedly greater efficiency.

Make no mistake: this is a cut in benefits to our veterans and their families.

“Elon Musk continues to make cuts to essential programs under the guise of efficiency. But the true purpose is all too clear,” said Leader Schumer. “The cruelty of a billionaire ripping away services and health care from the brave men and women who served our country – for his own tax cuts – is almost too much to believe. Senate Democrats have been working to expose these cuts to benefits and apply pressure for DOGE to reverse their actions. We will not stop fighting until we ensure that our service members are protected from these far-reaching and chaotic spending decreases.”

The Veterans Health Administration serves over 9 million veterans annually in 1,380 VA health care facilities, making it the largest U.S. health care system. It is clear – any staffing reduction will adversely affect the timeliness and quality of care these service members receive. As Congressional Republicans remain unwilling to stand up to Musk and DOGE, Senate Democrats are fighting back. Today, Senate Democrats released the following report highlighting how DOGE plans to cut the Department of Veterans Affairs to the bone and what that means for Americans.
