Reid: Democrats Sending President Second Chance To Give Veterans The Care They Need And Troops The Pay Raise They Deserve
Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after the U.S. Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008. President Bush vetoed the first version of the bill late last month:
“Democrats have again sent the President a bill that makes America safer, restores our military’s readiness and honors our veterans. After having vetoed the bill in December, we urge the President to sign this legislation and begin to rebuild our military.
“This bill gives our troops a well-deserved 3.5 percent pay raise and improves the health care and benefits we give our recovering veterans, service members and their families. It also addresses the military readiness crisis caused by President Bush’s flawed war strategy, gives our troops the equipment they need to safely do their jobs, and strengthens our counterterrorism operations along the Afghan-Pakistani border to help fight Al Qaeda and capture Bin Laden. This bill begins to take the necessary steps that will make our country safer and provide our heroic troops with the care and support they deserve.”

The Senate will convene at 9:30 a.m. and proceed to a period of morning business until 11:00 a.m., with the time equally divided and controlled between the two Leaders or their designees.
At 11:00 a.m., the Senate will resume consideration of the House Message with respect to H.R.1586 [Legislative vehicle for the Education Jobs Fund and FMAP] with 20 minutes for debate equally divided and controlled between Senators Baucus and DeMint, or their designees.
