February 4, 2008 Reid: Bush Budget Will Weaken Already Struggling EconomyWashington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to President Bush’s FY 2009 budget, which he released this morning: “For seven years, President Bush’s budgets have weakened our economic security. Today’s budget blueprint is no different. In the face of a looming recession, the President’s budget does nothing to strengthen our economy, and fails to respond to the real problems facing middle-class families. “His cuts to Medicare and Medicaid will only compound the problems facing seniors and millions of other Americans struggling amid ever-rising health care costs. Similarly, the budget fails to address other priorities important to working families, such as the rising costs of college and energy. “Furthermore, this budget is fiscally irresponsible and highly deceptive, hiding the costs of the war in Iraq while increasing our skyrocketing debt. President Bush’s fiscal policies are the worst in our nation’s history – he has turned record surpluses into record deficits – and this budget is more of the same.” ###
