Reid: Bush Continues To Play Politics With Nominees
Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to President Bush’s remarks this morning on the nominations process:
“Let’s be clear once and for all: The President is responsible for holding up dozens of nominees to important positions in federal agencies. Even though Senate Democrats have significant policy differences with many of these nominees, we have lived up to our responsibility and have allowed the Senate to work its will and confirm many of them. However, as he has made a habit of doing, President Bush has instead pursued his my-way-or-the-highway, all-or-nothing approach. As a result, many of these nominations – Democrat and Republican – have stalled, putting a number of agencies in jeopardy and slowing down our government.
“On a single day in December, we confirmed 84 Republican nominees. And despite the President’s stubbornness, we will continue confirming them in a timely fashion to keep our government operational. The President would better serve his nominees and their agencies by working with Congress to find common ground instead of holding press conferences and pointing fingers.”

The Senate will convene at 9:30 a.m. and proceed to a period of morning business until 11:00 a.m., with the time equally divided and controlled between the two Leaders or their designees.
At 11:00 a.m., the Senate will resume consideration of the House Message with respect to H.R.1586 [Legislative vehicle for the Education Jobs Fund and FMAP] with 20 minutes for debate equally divided and controlled between Senators Baucus and DeMint, or their designees.
