Reid To Bush: After Years Of Stalling On Climate Change, Administration Must Provide More Than Just Rhetoric
Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to President Bush’s speech on Climate Change:
“It took President Bush seven years before discussing climate change in a State of the Union address. Although we appreciate that he is finally willing to speak about the problem, he offered no substantive solutions today – just more delay. The time for words without action has long since passed.
“President Bush has said he hopes that environmental protection will be a central part of his legacy. Achieving that goal will take much more than rhetoric. We hope today’s speech signals a new willingness to come the table to work with us on finding real solutions. He can begin by immediately focusing federal resources on deploying clean and safe energy solutions, by leading the world in requiring reductions starting right now – not after 2025, and working with Congress to pass legislation to achieve immediate, significant and sustainable emission reductions that climate scientists recommend.”

The Senate will convene at 9:30 a.m. Following any Leader remarks, the Senate will resume consideration of the House Message on H.R.1586. There will be 1 hour for debate equally divided and controlled between the two Leaders or their designees, with Senator Murray controlling the Majority time.
Upon the use or yielding back of time (around 10:40 a.m.), the Senate will proceed to a roll call vote on the motion to invoke cloture on the motion to concur in the House amendment to the Senate amendment to H.R. 1586, with Reid for Murray amendment #4575 (FMAP and Teacher Funding).
